Our teenager shared her suicidal ideation with her primary care doctor in 2020, who referred us to Mara Johnson. We were highly concerned by the emerging mental health issue and sought professional help immediately.

For anyone going through this with a child, it is terrifying, stressful, and overwhelming. As parents, we want to do everything possible to support our children and address the underlying issues impacting their mental health.

Sadly, in our situation with Mara Johnson, we were shut out. We were told that our 13-year-old was in charge of her mental health treatment and that no information would be provided. We tried to engage our daughter and therapist but were shut down. We felt helpless for 6 months.

We finally got contacted by Mara Johnson to be told our child needed to be admitted into an IOP (intensive outpatient therapy) group in the next week, or she threatened to 5150 our child. We were alarmed by the dire diagnosis after so little communication from our therapist. We feared suddenly forcing our child into a mental facility could cause more harm, so we rushed to find an IOP that would admit her.

The saving grace of moving to an IOP was that a patient could only be treated by one therapist at a time, allowing us to end care under Mara Johnson. Our child had developed an unhealthy bond with Mara Johnson, and we had feared leaving her care would further deepen the mental health crisis.

Over time, with the help of other healthcare professionals, we made significant progress, and our child is in a much better place.

I hope our experience is an isolated incident. Still, I share it with others seeking mental health care for their children to ask questions about inclusion and collaboration with parents in the process.
