The Buckhorn Recreation Area is a quiet and convenient place for an overnight stay, especially for those visiting Lassen Volcanic National Park. Although there is no electricity at the campsite, this doesn’t pose a significant issue for most visitors. The facilities include a clean restroom with water and lighting, as well as a shower room, which adds convenience to the stay.

It’s worth noting that only one area within the campground allows for car camping, so be mindful of this when making reservations. The lack of generator noise contributes to a peaceful atmosphere, making it easy to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings.

Overall, Buckhorn Recreation Area is a great option for a tranquil overnight experience close to nature, with easy access to essential amenities.

We had a great weekend tent camping at this campground. It was not a full campground which made the trip very enjoyable. There were some small groups and they were respectful of quite hours. Most sites were spaced out well, and had good amount of space for multiple tents (or a larger tent).
Pro: many of the sites have pull through parking and BBQ grill. You can bring your own wood or collect drift wood for fires. Playground. Trails.

Cons: the bathrooms were not kept clean or supplied. When we arrived there was TP in the restrooms, but by the end of the first day it was basically gone. One of the stalls in the women's was clogged and the men's also. By the end of the second day there was no TP.
Lots of bees.

Our family had a wonderful camping trip here this summer. It was clean and had the most beautiful views. We had several water spouts and electrical outlets in the coverd pavillion. Our own private bathrooms and showers except for the few people from the public who wondered in. Perfect for big groups.

Our recent three-day camping trip at Buckhorn Campground near Black Butte Lake was great fun. The campground's cleanliness and serene atmosphere provided an ideal setting for a relaxing getaway. We particularly enjoyed the tranquility of the surroundings, as the campground was relatively quiet during our stay.

We selected site number 7 for our 32' RV, appreciating its decent views and ability to accommodate our RV. However, one aspect caught us by surprise: the orientation of the RV sites in relation to the road access. Sites 2, 4, 7, 9, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16, including ours, have their door facing the roadside due to the campground's directional access policy. This meant that instead of stepping out onto our campsite, we had to exit onto the road, which was an inconvenience and somewhat of a safety concern.

It would have been helpful if this information were communicated on the booking site, allowing campers to make more informed decisions regarding site selection. Knowing in advance that certain sites would position the passenger-side door toward the road would have influenced our choice, as we prefer to exit directly into the campsite area and use the awning and lights.

Despite this small inconvenience, our overall experience at Buckhorn Campground was positive. We enjoyed the beautiful surroundings, and the cleanliness of the facilities enhanced our stay. We hope the campground management considers updating their information to include details about site orientation, ensuring a more seamless experience for future campers.

We look forward to returning to Buckhorn Campground in the near future.

The lake is great. Water isn't too cold, it was perfect for all day swimming. The campsites are a good size. We had a large group and got these sites together: 7, 9, 13, 14. The bathrooms are nice and have hot/cold showers. There was a volleyball court next to our sites that was fun for the whole group. Only cons about the place are that the mosquitos here were vicious! I've never been to a place as bad. Even with bug Sprays and candles, our whole group experienced multiple bites, all over. So much so that the kids were over it and wanted to leave after the 1st night. The other con was hiw hot it was and the lack of shade. We went camping her in mid Aug and the heat was almost unbearable. We would love to come back but we have 2nd thought due to the bug situation and the heat.

Would have been better had the host been aware of the generators going at all hours of the night and a huge party till 3 a.m. we got maybe 2 hours sleep.

We did let them know the next day and there were no problems after that.

I would go back

I bet this place is gorgeous during the Spring time when everything is still green! This is our 3rd time coming here. Each time was super windy. I wouldn't recommend camping here in the summer. Too hot, not a lot of trees, everything is dead & brown after Spring time & lots of rattlesnake warnings. Dogs must stay on a leash here. There is boat access, swimming access and decent restrooms. There is also a mini playground area for kids.

It was beautiful at this campground. It was a little cold this time of year, specially at night, but the camp sites are well spaced and it was so serene.
