My CFI, Luke Ferrene, has been nothing but energetic and helpful as I begin my journey as an aviator. After receiving my PPL at Van Nuys Airport (KVNY), I was looking to find a rental fleet and flight school for my future missions and ratings a bit closer to where I live in the city. Proteus at Santa Monica Airport has met and exceeded my needs and expectations!

Fleet: they have an excellent rental fleet. It is easy to schedule a rental using their web app, and you can see any notes related to the plane you're renting in the app as well. They maintain their planes much better than other rental fleets I have seen, and have a great array of planes which can fit different budgets and missions. The prices are fair for the quality and convenience you're getting. Notably, if you compare their prices to other fleets in the area, it's important to realize that you basically spend zero time waiting for fuel or (VFR) clearance at this airport.

Staff: I've had a great impression from the staff. Amanda at the front desk is always welcoming when I come in to check-in, and is able to help over the phone if I have adjustments I need to make to my reservations. I've received instruction during my check-out flights from Luke and Kirkland; they both have great pride in their skills as CFIs, and provide constructive feedback during the training. You can tell that they care about training other pilots. Lastly, the owner Haris is very receptive to feedback and takes pride in running a nice training operation.

Facilities: Parking is super easy, and right next to the entrance. When you walk in, you're greeted by the staff, and can walk onto the apron directly from there after getting your dispatch sheet and keys. They have a lounge area with seating for you and your guests, as well as some light snacks and refreshments. There's multiple private rooms for instruction and briefing, bathroom facilities, as well as a simulator room for practicing instrument procedures. Lastly, the facilities are notably super clean -- it feels like a modern FBO even though it's a flight school.

Overall, I highly recommend you check out Proteus if you're interesting in training or renting in the LA area!

Learnt to fly on the Piper Cherokee a few years ago. I was the slowest learner and the oldest in the group - mid 50ies to take up flying. I graduated with flying colors and now instrument training and on my way to fractional ownership in a cirrus. I learned to fly Cherokee’s , light sports , cirrus 20 and 22 all at this wonderful school.
. Fantastic instructors like Jesse, Bernard, Rachel, Sydney, Ely, Max all played their part!
Location - Haris and Dylan run the most family friendly flight school that caters to all and even offers substantial classroom lectures and monthly social events. This is a family of friendly aviators always willing to help and support the new trainee.
KSMO as an airport is just about the best location to enjoy the beauty of Southern California from above!

Flew with Kirkland this past weekend in a very well equipped Piper Arrow. Received my complex endorsement and some IFR training. Had a wonderful time. Kirkland was very experienced and a patient and kind instructor. I would highly recommend Proteus and Kirkland!
