This a review of counseling services, NOT SMC as a whole. I actually really liked my SMC experience and would recommend it to anyone looking to start their higher education journey.
About 10 years ago, I was extremely depressed and feeling very hopeless, especially after getting a "C" in my intro to chem class. I was trying to get in to nursing school and I knew that anything but "A's" in all of my classes wouldn't be acceptable. I went to go talk to a counselor about my options and worries. This counselor, who was the primary counselor for health-related majors, ACTUALLY told me that I should "GIVE UP ON MY DREAM" to become a nurse. She said "Nursing isn't for everyone and you have to be more committed to school to get into nursing school". Absolutely NOT what I needed to hear at that moment in time.

10 years later I am an experienced RN working my absolute dream job in my top-choice hospital and wish I would find out her name so I could show her she was wrong...

Wow where do I begin? This counseling service smc offers is one of the most detrimental things to students I have ever witnessed. I have been misled multiple times, adding in total 3 semesters of classes that were not required because I was told to by counselors. Piece of advice, do all research and work yourself. These counselors will only make your college experience more difficult! At times it seems they do not care, or simply do not know the answers to your questions. Disorganized, rude, chaotic are a few words I’d use to describe the department.

Drop-in counseling is either closed or insanely too long of a wait. Ridiculous.

As a student for 5+ years, I can regretfully suggest that you do your own research regarding what classes you need. This office is unorganized and the employees are just there for the paycheck. I have been misinformed/mislead at least four times regarding what path I should take for the degree I requested. I know that some people are there because they actually care; however, the majority don't care or don't know what they are doing.

Literally the worst staff ever! Inconsiderate lazy liars ! The staff close the center on their time without considering the student they serve and the counselors are so quick to dismiss concerns and get someone out.

Not the best counselors imo
Even though the campus is nice and such I've had better counselors and teachers for the most part elsewhere
